Runescape

RuneScape is one of the oldest representatives of the MMORPG genre. The online game was launched in 2001 and has managed to survive to this day – thanks to a loyal community.

Currently, three versions of the game are operated. The regular version, which is still supplied with updates and expansions and is further developed, and RuneScape Classic. This version is still in the state it was in “back in the day”, since many veterans couldn’t do anything with the innovations and changes that have been made over the years.

For these loyal fans, the developers continued to run the Classic version – which will now soon be discontinued. For those who are nostalgic but still open to customizations, there is still the option to play Old School RuneScape.

Runespace is already 18 years old and still has many fans. However, they are now outraged because of microtransactions.

Due to advancements in technology and because there was no way to create a new account in RuneScape Classic at all, the developers have now decided to discontinue this version. The game had also become too vulnerable to bot attacks.

In the coming months, the game will be slowly phased out and the servers will be taken offline on August 6. If you still want to play “old-school”, you will have to switch to the Old Scool RuneScape version.

The Gameplay of RuneScape

RuneScape takes players to the world of Gielinor, where the focus is on completing quests and developing their character. Skills can be improved with accumulated experience. In most cases, the maximum skill level is 99, but there are a few exceptions where a maximum level of 120 is possible.

The skills are divided into four groups: Combat, Extraction/Gathering, Processing/Crafting, and Independent. Combat-related skills include the three fighting styles of melee, ranged and magic, but also, for example, life points. The game then calculates the character’s combat level from the values of this group.

Among the gathering skills, activities for extracting raw materials are again listed. These include mining, farming and theft. Afterwards, players can process collected resources with the character’s crafting skills. This group includes, for example, blacksmithing, cooking, and runecrafting.

Independent skills include archaeology or dexterity.

A basic version of RuneScape is free to play. However, not all content is unlocked in this version – this includes quests, but also skills. If you want to unlock this content, you have to pay for a membership according to the pay-to-play model.
